A Great Beginning to Our Week!

Wednesday June 24th 2015

I forgot to write that yesterday during our walk, a woman came right up to us and said, “I’ve see you several times in Balboa Park.” Wow! That’s pretty cool! We are famous in our own right.

I did simple, beautiful makeup today. God I can’t wait to bleach my roots next week!

IMG_20150624_194810102 IMG_20150624_195216979 We went to Pensao Atalaia to sing to Maria for her birthday. When she came downstairs, she put a bill in Thoth’s hand. Thoth tried to say “no” but Maria insisted. She really loves us. The whole family came downstairs to listen to us. We played “Waltz” for her. By the time we got going, people were in the street as well watching us. When we finished, Vonda was crying and Maria and she kissed us on either cheek. It’s like we’re part of their family.

We were really early to our spot, so we set up slowly. IMG_20150624_202751877 The prayformance seemed immensely unenergetic and slow at first, but our two Finnish roommates came to watch us after “Anya.” No one clapped after that song. 🙁 That’s always weird. Anyway, it did get much better.  One of our roommates bought a CD before they left. That was nice of them. They both stayed for at least 5 songs. By 10:30, people were gathering like crazy and actually coming and sitting in the space to watch us. For such a bad start to the day, we did very well. I was pleased! At the end, the couple who lives above the space came to watch out last 2 songs with their little puppy, Kiwi. He’s the puppy who always sings with us. He sang with us tonight, too. We did “Pentagram” and “Heaven Scent” the latter of which he sang along to the entire time. He made a sweet little howl right at the end. It was so adorable. Everyone loved it. The owners let me take a picture with him.

A woman who had been watching us and sitting next to Kiwi said, “I saw you guys at Tourette’s Without Regrets in December.” It’s shocking how many people recognize us and remember us here! I bet as soon as we get to New York someone will say “I saw you in Lisbon!”

We had a yummy dinner at Nood. Our favorite waiter, Paulo was there. We hadn’t seen him in a while. Thoth was in a good mood. He only makes faces when he’s in a good mood. 🙂

Much Better Today

Thursday June 4th 2015

Today was much better, though Thoth and I were both upset about an email correspondence we had with a friend. Thoth more than I. I was sad, but he was still angry. He gets his anger out when we prayform, but we were thinking about the email too much last night to get over it. I was more inspired with my makeup today, which helped my moral a lot. I don’t feel good when I don’t feel pretty.

I was also really wanting to shave the sides of my head, but Thoth reminded me of my goal to have long hair. If I shave any part of my hair, I will eventually have to cut it all off again. I don’t want to do that. I made a compromise by braiding the sides of my hair. I like how it looked.IMG_20150510_214142432IMG_20150510_214254958

We went to our spot and set up. A young Bohemian looking man stopped and asked, “What are you two beautiful people doing?” and stayed to listen to our first few pieces. It was really hard to gather an audience. The man’s dog barking and the music from Gardenia didn’t help. When we finished “Anya,” the music hadn’t stopped, so I went and knocked on the glass of Gardenia asking them to turn it off. They did thankfully. Audiences today still weren’t that great, but we played our older set to give the opera a break. I’m glad we did. When we’re banging our heads against the wall with the opera it’s good to give it a break. I eventually want us to have 5 different sets to choose from on any given day. That’s a lot of music! We DID play “Meeting” from “Esh and Ee-ay” and Thoth came towards me to hug me at the end, and it worked! I put my arms up and he put them out. The only way we can see if things work is by doing it in public.

A British woman in the audience was very impressed by our voices. “You’re a Countertenor.” she said. Most people don’t know that word. “And your voice sounds like a bell. It’s so pure.” That hasn’t been said to me in a while. “I’m surprised you haven’t been discovered yet. You should be playing in opera houses.” she said. It’s interesting when unhelpful words about what I’m doing are going through my head, then someone says that to us. It reminds me that what we’re doing is beautiful.

Despite the audiences not being so great, we played longer than yesterday and did much better. I was happy when we finished, and so was Thoth. He had released himself of his anger. I was glad. We went to the Indian place for dinner. Thoth was in a good mood and so was I.IMG_20150510_213827884 IMG_20150510_213833575 IMG_20150510_214630255

A Magical, Wonderful Final Prayformance in Balboa Park!

Sunday May 3rd 2015

I did some frilly makeup today.

Today's look.

Today’s look.

I even braided my hair. I love when my roots are all white. Got to be all pretty for our final prayformance!

Pretty braids.

Pretty braids.

We got a Square, which enables us to accept credit cards in the park. We’ve always wanted to get one, but we didn’t have a smartphone. I also wondered if it would cost money, but you’re only charged a small percentage per sale.

Forrest and Tasha arrived to pick us up. As we were setting up to play, lots of people showed up and we were able to use Square immediately. Forrest, Tasha, Bill, Ali, Becca, Mel, Carissa, Ida, Yeshe, Tony, Kevin and many people who’s names I don’t know came. It made me SO happy. We’ve jumped a level, just like THAT! I told Forrest and he was very happy for us. I was sure lots of people were coming, but of course I was super happy that many people came.

More and more people showed up as we played. Such lovely fans and friends! We are so lucky to have so many wonderful friends! Since Thursday’s filming of the opera, we have worked out more things, it’s fantastic. We took requests after playing the opera. “‘Waltz’!” Ali said. “‘Gypsy Dance’!” Kevin said. “If we played ‘Romanza’ would that make you happy?” I asked Forrest. “Yes.” he said. We started with ‘Romanza,’ but we both had no idea what key it was in. Fuck. Eventually we let it go and came up with something new. We had so many fans there, lots of them noticed. I like that they noticed. When we finished, Forrest said at one point he could tell things were going a different direction and said “This is gonna be awesome.” “What was that second to last piece?” Mel asked. “It was supposed to be ‘Romanza,’ but we forgot what key it was in. It turned into ‘Sea Expressions.'” I said. “It was a mashup.” Mel said laughing.

We hugged our friends and packed up for dinner. Bill cried. He always cries when we leave. Forrest, Tasha and Della waited for us. We were both in high spirits and laughing. I was cursing like I do, which makes Forrest laugh a lot. “I’m only doing it to make him laugh.” I said.

We all 5 of us drove to dinner at King’s Fish House. 10 people came. It was so pleasant. Tribal Baroque fans unite! I am so happy to have so many friends and fans here. It makes coming here so wonderful and fun.

On the way home, Forrest said, (I’m paraphrasing here.) “Even when you think you totally suck, you’re blowing people’s minds.” It’s hard to remember that, but it’s true. We need a little Forrest in our pockets so whenever we’re sad we can take him out and he says nice things!

Thank you friends. Thank you San Diego. Thank you for loving us. Thank you for caring about us. Thank you for making us feel welcome here. Thank you for coming to see us. It means so much to us that we have support here. It means so much to us that people love our music. It’s taken so long to develop a strong group of friends. Now whenever we travel, I’m looking forward to seeing our friends. Even the most beautiful city in the world feels empty without friends. Forrest, Tasha, Mel and Carissa have all mentioned coming to see us in New York. God that would be so much fun!!!!!!! I can’t wait to see all our friends in the Bay Area!
