A Life of Art

Friday June 25th 2016

I acted for 4 hours when I got up, had a vegetarian lunch and watched some “best acting of all time” clips while getting ready to play. It was inspiring! I don’t understand how to act, but when I see good actors I know which ones are the best. It’s a particular look they have, the way they carry themselves and how they speak. My favorite actors are Daniel Day Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Spacey, Sharlto Copley, Ralph Finnes, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Johnny Depp and Gary Oldman. There are others. All men of course, and all intense in their own ways. I love intensity.

I got all dressed up tonight, for some reason. I was inspired I guess. I’ve come to realize that dressing up isn’t for the audience, it’s for me. It helps me prayform better, feel more confident and have more fun. I like being outrageous and doing something with my look people don’t do.

Elisa and her boyfriend came to see us for the second time since we’ve been here. We knew it would be a great prayformance evening for us when we saw them. We love when fans come to see us! It makes us feel appreciated and loved! They stayed for the full two hour prayformance. They even dressed up. It was a fantastic night. When we finished, she gave me a new Babe she’d made just for me! OMGGGGG!!!!!!!!! So cute!!!! I feel so happy when people love our work. It makes me feel like a completely different person.

There were lots of gay men in the street. It’s Gay Pride this weekend. They loved my look, but¬† were quite drunk. ūüôā We had dinner at the Italian place we used to go to, called Boteo, in Barrio Alto. It used to be called Mama Rosa. The chef remembered us and gave us free drinks and toasted with us. He was so handsome! He reminds me of our friend Michael C. from the Bay Area. The food is better than it’s ever been there. Highly recommended! I love when people treat us well, like celebrities. It was a fantastic end to our night.

I am so lucky to be living this life! I get to rest and do whatever I want in the house all day, have a delicious lunch, then get dressed up and go out to play for a couple hours. We have fans who come see us, then have a delicious dinner at a restaurant where the chef loves us! I’ve worked so hard and long to be able to experience happy times like these. There was a time when we were here back when we first arrived in 2010 and we weren’t doing well at all. I was terrified then, but look at us now! I have to tough out the hard times to be able to again enjoy the joyous times. There’s no reason for us to go anywhere else in the summer but Lisbon. People love us, the restaurants love us. We have a place to live a 10 minute walk away from our prayformance spot. We seem to get more an more famous every year we come here.

Imagine when it’s been 10 years of us coming to Lisbon or San Diego. We’re quite well known in those cities now, but imagine what it will be like then? Or 20 years! I didn’t think about that when we first started traveling. We’re getting famous, but we’re doing it the slower, more organic way. Each person who becomes a fan meets us and speaks to us face to face. Each person discovers us in a different way, and they don’t forget us. It does pay off to stick with your art. It does!!

A Tiring, Difficult Week

Tribal Baroque’s Wednesday vlog:

We had lunch at Ink. I’m filming everything all the time now. It was hard getting ready to play today. I was talking to my sister on Skype and she was sad and lonely. It’s hard to see her like that when I’m half way around the world from her. Poor baby. I didn’t really like my look either. It felt like it was going to be slow at our spot, and it was, but Victor came again and brought two friends. We played for an hour and a half and Victor and his friends stayed the entire time. I wasn’t feeling good because, low and behold, I got my period! We dropped our things at home and went out for pizza for dinner.

Tribal Baroque Thursday vlog:

We were emailed by Rose, telling us to move to another apartment this morning. It completely ruined our day. We were angry and uncomfortable all day. I sent an email back saying we didn’t want to move again. No response all day. The prayformance crowds were as slow as molasses. I got so frustrated at one point I wanted to cry after one audience took almost half a minute to clap after a song, and even then most of them didn’t clap. A couple sat for the entire prayformance and clapped. The girl was a big fan. “I’ve waited for 3 months for you to come.” she said. That cheered me up. We had burgers for dinner.

Rose called and said we had to move out because 12 people were arriving in a half hour. She didn’t get my email. We were pissed as we packed up our stuff and it was brought downstairs. It was the LAST thing I wanted to do. Rose’s husband and Rui brought all our things downstairs, put them in their van, drove to the other apartment and brought it upstairs for us. We bumped into our friend Jorge and he took us to lunch at Ink down the street. That made us feel better. He reminded me I needed to make sure I get a response before assuming someone is going to do something. “Accountability.” he said.

Prayformance was rough for me. Audiences were again like molasses. I couldn’t smile. “Are you focused? I’m here. I’m your husband.” Thoth said. I accidentally dropped my new bow and it snapped.¬† I wanted to throw my violin on the ground and give up I was so frustrated. I was able to get through it and it got a bit better as it got later. We had Nepalese food near home for dinner. The guys who work at that place treat us so respectfully. I wish everyone in the world treated us like that.

Tribal Baroque’s Saturday vlog:

I had a better day today. We had lunch at Ink Farm Food Cafe and I edited vlogs all day. We didn’t play at 56 Rua Garrett until 9pm. It got better last night as it got later, and it did tonight. We had the best night we’ve had in a week. I realized I haven’t smiled during prayformance all week. I smiled tonight, a lot. We were both full of energy and I improvised a lot more and had fun with the music. It makes such a big difference when people are focused on us. We were brimming over with energy and went to Nood for dinner.

Tribal Baroque’s Sunday vlog:

Sunday was St. Anthony’s Day here in Lisbon. I didn’t eat anything all day, saving myself for a sushi dinner at Miss Jappa after prayformance that night. There were tons of people out and vendors selling fish and sangria and beer. Nuts. A guy tried to kiss me, or something. We played at 56 Rua Garrett from 8:30 to 10pm. The entire night people were walking past us, headed to the parade or up to the square to get drunk. They were immensely unfocused. A man who had seen our show on Saturday night came and sat and watched us for most of the prayformance. If we had not had a good night on Saturday, I wouldn’t have felt so great about the night, but I managed to have fun. We were both tired when we finished. We dropped our things off at home and went to dinner at 11pm.

An Utterly Breathtaking Prayformance!

Friday November 27th 2015

Dan Rubin and his brother Josh invited us to sushi after prayformance tonight. It’s always nice to have something to look forward to! I made myself up especially pretty so Dan would have something beautiful to work with. I didn’t know, but it would be the last time we’d see him! He comes to see us prayform more than anyone in the entire world.

“Hi Thoth.” someone said¬†on the subway. He recognized him from performing in the park years ago and even asked if he still had the foot drum.¬†It’s cool when that happens. I wonder if that will ever happen to me. The park was bustling with people, but there were no break dancers and no performers in the tunnel. Usually the family that plays before us is there. Something had happened, but we had no idea what. We set up and Dan arrived. Since we were there early, Dan and I had plenty of time to take pictures around the Angel Fountain. ¬†_IGP5994 _IGP5997 _IGP6003 _IGP6011 _IGP6022 _IGP6026 _IGP6077a

Dan brought his good tape recorder and recorded the prayformance. When we began playing, we had the most ginormous crowd circling us. They clapped appreciatively when we finished “Anya.” It was the start of a great prayformance, one of the best we’d had at the tunnel. On days like this, when audiences¬†are¬†super focused and attuned to us, I feel like we’re performing in¬†a theatre. That’s what makes us so energetic. Our energy was out the roof for the entire 2 hours. I was actually hot, but it was unusually balmy for the end of November, 63 degrees._IGP6174 _IGP6233 _IGP6309

For the rest of the prayformance we had big, BIG audiences. “KIshan told me what happened with the break dancers.” Thoth told me. He said a few of them¬†had put down a bag near a large group of kids earlier at the Bandshell and yelled “Bomb! Bomb!” and ran away. All the kids ran and people¬†called the police. Now the break dancers are wanted for terrorism or something! Isn’t that nuts?! Makes sense they would be that stupid. Vlad came to watch us. Two girls sat on the pillar in front and watched all of the opera. They threw us a nice tip when they had to leave and I handed them a CD. “Do you know us?” I asked. “A friend told us to come see you.” they said. “We’d been looking forward to it for a while.” they said. I always know someone knows us if they sit for a long time. Near¬†the end, after “Tango,” a pair of twins were so into our music and lathered us with praise. “You come¬†straight from your hearts.” one¬†said. “We were mesmerize and entranced.” the other said. I told them I was a twin and their eyes lit up and they smiled from ear to ear. A woman approached me with her family saying how much she loved the show. “I read your blog. It’s so positive.” she said. A couple who had seen us a year prior sat and watched for a long while, too. Another man who had seen Thoth 15 years ago said, “I really love the duo.”

_IGP6398Paul was there in the corner. Thoth talked with him while we packed up and then Vlad, Dan, Josh, me and Thoth walked to sushi on 72nd and B’Way. My sister called and said she loves my vlog. “I don’t like reading so it’s nice to watch a little video and see how you’re doing.” she said.. I’m glad!¬†We had a great time and the sushi¬†was delicious. Dan and Josh treated us. We said goodbye to Josh on the subway and Dan and Vlad¬†went into the station with us. Dan gave us a gift. I was so touched. “You can add up all the times I’ve been to see you.” he said. I told him how much we appreciate his support of our work. He knows that, but I love telling him. We are so blessed. We’re leaving the city in 3 days.
